Volunteer in Haiti

Project Medishare engages volunteers to help provide medical care to Haitians, and assist in the training and education of Haitian doctors, nurses and other medical staff. At Hospital Bernard Mevs in Port-au-Prince, we offer volunteer opportunities for allied healthcare professionals, including but not limited to physicians, nurses, physical therapists and EMTs.
The first step to volunteering with Project Medishare is to register and indicate the dates you are available to travel. Volunteer arrivals and departures are only available on Tuesdays. You must have an active medical license to volunteer. A minimum one-week commitment is required, but we encourage you to stay longer if possible.
We require that you contribute at least US$600 to cover logistics, meals, housing and other expenses related to your trip. You can either donate the full amount yourself or you can create a personal fundraising page and invite your co-workers, friends and family to help you raise the money. If you volunteer for more than one week, there is a fee of $75 for each additional week. Any amount you donate or raise above $600 will support Project Medishare’s work in Haiti, like treating children with severe malnutrition, ensuring pregnant women receive prenatal care and providing rural communities with access to clean water.
Volunteer opportunities are open to the following medical professionals:
MDs specializing in: ER, Internal, ICU, PICU, NICU, Pediatric ER
RNs specializing in: ER, ICU, PACU, PICU, NICU
EMTs and Paramedics, RRTs, Physical Therapists
We do not accept medical student volunteers at Hospital Bernard Mevs. Medical students, under the supervision of a licensed physician, are welcome to join us as volunteers in the Central Plateau. For more information on our university partnerships please email info@projectmedishare.org

“Haiti changed my life in more ways than I know how to express. Haiti opened my eyes to different parts of the world and how other people live, and changed my heart in ways that I didn’t even know it needed to be changed. Haiti has put my life, and what’s important, into perspective. Haiti has made me realize how blessed and fortunate I am to live in the place that I do and have the opportunities that I have. Haiti has made me more self-aware of how I spend my time, energy, and money. Haiti has made me realize that I am a lot stronger and capable of things than I thought- it pushed me out of my comfort zone, and for that, I am forever grateful,” Erin said.

"I went in expecting a lot of systematic issues and extreme poverty. I expected a weakly structured healthcare system. I knew that access to health care and development services would be very limited." After a week in Haiti he was "surprised and glad to see a lot of the facilities and development of a lot of the medical personnel at the hospital. In a country so poor and with so little health care, it was really great to see." Leo's advice to those considering volunteering in Haiti? "Come with an open heart and open mind. Respect the Haitian healthcare workers and be prepared to both teach and learn simultaneously, regardless of your level of skill and experience."
