SCHOOL LUNCH
No child deserves to feel hunger.
But for thousands of children in Haiti’s Central Plateau, hunger is an everyday reality. Many children in Haiti walk long distances to attend school (up to two hours each way) with nothing to eat before they leave home and nothing to eat during the school day.
These children are not only failing to obtain the vital nutrition their bodies need to develop properly, but they are also struggling academically- unable to concentrate or even stay awake during class.
In 2015 Project Medishare started a school feeding program in the Central Plateau to ensure that children receive the proper nourishment they need to grow and to thrive in school. The goals of our school feeding program are to combat food insecurity, improve the health and well-being of children, and improve overall academic performance.
Today Project Medishare serves more than 700 children a breakfast snack and hot lunch every school day. Each school employs local community members as cooks and sources its produce from the local markets to provide economic support to their communities. For many of the children in these schools, their school lunch provides the only real meal that they will eat that day.
