MATERNAL HEALTH

No woman should die giving birth. Yet, for so many mothers in rural Haiti, this is the harsh reality. Tens of thousands of women in Haiti’s Central Plateau lack access to prenatal care. They give birth at home, with no help if there are complications for the baby or themselves during and after delivery. As a result, this region has some of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the world.

Project Medishare currently runs two rural maternity centers, as well as mobile clinics, that provide prenatal and postnatal care, baby delivery services and family planning to a population of more than 80,000. More than 60% of women in our communities deliver their babies in our facilities. We also train midwives and community health workers to be able to support pregnant women in their communities.

  • Midwife Training

We provide training to midwives throughout the region to ensure they have the support and supplies needed. We ensure we educate them as best we can on warning signs, symptoms of a difficult pregnancy/delivery and who to contact in case of emergencies.

What We Do

  • We provide pregnant women with exams in rural settings - bringing healthcare closer to them. If it is needed we refer them to our larger clinics or hospitals. We strive to ensure every woman has a safe pregnancy and delivery within our catchment area.

  • Community Health Agents go house to house to visit families and pregnant women in their communities to ensure all is going well with the pregnancy or newborn baby.

  • We vaccinate pregnant women from tetanus and diphtheria, as well as provide vitamin A supplements and pre-natal vitamins such as folic acid.

  • We counsel women (and men) on family planning and the different options they have available to them to ensure they plan for their and their families future.

  • We bring midwives together to train, discuss what is going on in their communities and discuss any issues they may have. We encourage them to send any pregnant women to our clinics and make sure they know we are there to support them whenever it is needed.

  • We provide birth kits to the midwives throughout our communities, ensuring they have all clean, new supplies to deliver babies outside of the clinic.

  • This includes new moms, breastfeeding moms, expecting moms, family planning groups, so women can get together and talk about what is going on in their lives, answer questions and share stories to help support one another. We sponsor these group meetings.
